Derby Middle School Media Center Mural
The idea for this mural in a middle school library/media center is that from an opened book, knowledge explodes out in the form of a chaotic array of elements representing different genres of literature, math, music and art, (detailed explanations below).

Character added while painting to help hide the bubble eye security camera incorporating a 3D "goggle" around the camera

This is the Derby Panther Fight song

Combining the iconic Emerald City with the state motto as shown on the Kansas flag

This element combines the icons from the Kansas flag with the Yellow Brick Road from the Wizard of Oz

Locomotive is an homage to the history of Derby as the town was started along the railway system. The town of Derby was originally named El Paso as indicated on cab

The background sky is represents the Starry Night painting

Recreation of one of Amelia Earhart's (Kansas Native) plane she used cross the Atlantic Ocean. The registration number on the plane's wing indicates the year that Derby Middle School (formerly Derby High School) opened its doors

The banner has a double meaning The phase 'Stay Gold" is in reference to the familiar quote from the The Outsiders Adding Green to the phrase denotes the school colors
